BUT IF YOU DON'T KNOW IF YOU NEED NEW TIRES YET, HERE'S HOW YOU CAN TELL: The minimum tread depth of a tire required by law is 2/32" (2/32 of an inch). If you have a tread depth gauge, use that and it will give you the most accurate measurement. If you DON'T have a tread depth gauge, no worries... GRAB A PENNY and shove Abe Lincoln into your tire tread, head-first. If your tire tread does NOT cover Abe Lincoln's head, you are below the minimum required tread depth and you need new tires. The top of Abe's head is at precisely 2/32" from the edge of the penny, which means that if you can see Abe's head, you need more tread!... New tires, that is. NOTE: independent studies also show that your tires lose significant traction in wet driving conditions once you reach 4/32" of tread (4/32 of an inch), so you should really consider getting new tires once you hit that mark, especially during wet weather. How do you measure that? GRAB A QUARTER and shove George Washington into your tire tread, head-first. If your tire tread does NOT cover George Washington's head, you are in the danger zone of under 4/32" of tread. Are you illegal? No. Are you close? Yes. Is your safety significantly compromised, especially in wet driving conditions? Yes. If you run these two tests on your tires and you determine you need new tires or may need new tires soon, click HERE for up to three free tire quotes based on your vehicle's requirements, your budget and the best value tire in regard to warranty, performance and current price.
